Indonesian is spoken in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Serawak, and Singapore, and it is one of the easiest languages to learn. This course is designed for beginners, who want to learn Indonesian language either for work, travel or for any other reason. You will be introduced to the basic language structure and vocabularies, to help you communicate in simple everyday contexts. The course covers topics of what you may experience when travelling or working in Indonesia. Culture and tradition related to the topics will be discussed.

Course outline

  • Topic 1: Introduction to Bahasa Indonesia and its history and character. Introducing alphabets, pronunciation, intonation, and greetings with a focus of using the proper "you".
  • Topic 2: The main topic will be on discussing family and the use of personal pronouns. You will also learn numbers 1-10 and how to use possessive statements such as, "this is my book".
  • Topic 3: You will learn how to introduce yourself, family and friends, group classifying as well as learning numbers up to 100.
  • Topic 4: You will learn how to understand the time such as year, month, day, and hour, asking questions and providing responses.
  • Topic 5: The topic of focus will be on food including inviting people over for dinner and ordering and accepting meals. There will also be a look at Indonesian culture of food and traditions.
  • Topic 6: There will be a focus on health, parts of the body, common words and expressions and how to ask how someone is feeling as well as what it means to be sick in Indonesia.
  • Topic 7: You will learn how to develop simple sentences using verbs and affixes, and knowing colour, shapes and units.
  • Topic 8: You will learn about travelling in Indonesia including how to ask and give directions and key expressions.
  • Topic 9: You will learn how to communicate with Indonesians regarding different events, asking for assistance, giving instructions and expressing your hopes and wishes.

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • ask questions, answer and express your wants/needs, likes/dislike, what you agree/disagree with, Thanksgiving and regrets
  • describing and compare items
  • explain about healthknow how to shop and ask directions
  • understand some of the Indonesian culture applied in everyday life
  • confidently travel in Indonesia
