Beginning Japanese 2 is designed for those who have completed Beginning Japanese 1 or similar (approximately 20 hours of study) and wishing to extend their conversational, written and grammatical understanding of the Japanese language as well as learning about Japanese culture.

  • Does this (train) go to Yokohama? - Transportation 交通こうつう
  • Kore, Yokohama ni ikimasu ka. / Shinjuku made doyatte ikeba ii desu ka. / Tokyo kara Kyoto made donogurai kakarimasu ka.
  • Does this (train) go to Yokohama? / How do I get to Shingjuku? / How long does it take from Tokyo to Kyoto?
  • I’m going to an art museum. - Talking about plans and activities. 予定よてい行動こうどうについて話はな
  • Bijutsukan ni ikimasu. / Kino wa uchi de Nihon-go o benkyo shimashita. / Sumo o mitai desu.
  • I’m going to an art museum. / I studied Japanese at home yesterday. / I want to watch sumo wrestling.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should:

  • have a fundamental understanding of everyday Japanese.
  • have a basic understanding of grammatical patterns, Japanese characters, and a range of everyday vocabulary
