Cinema tells stories through montage, where different characters, scenarios, and actions are juxtaposed into a sequence. While montage is an incredibly powerful tool, one that effectively allows us to manipulate and compress different times and spaces onto a single timeline, there is also a compelling history of cinema and video art which avoids the use of montage and instead uses just a single shot as the primary tool for telling a story or taking the viewer through a visual experience.

This taster will introduce the single shot, in various forms and contexts within cinema and video art. We will look at examples of how artists and filmmakers have created memorable works with just one take, a technique that isn’t necessarily as simple as it sounds!
