This course is to enable students to learn how to communicate with Chinese through useful expressions, culture-specific dialogues, and paragraph texts with cultural tips (in both Chinese words and Pinyin). This is to help those students who have learnt Chinese and intend to maintain their language skills. At the end of this course, students are welcome to continue to study Continuing Mandarin 2.

Course outline

  • Topics: Traditional and new ways of greetings
  • Topics: Ways of addressing people in terms of gender and profession
  • Topics: Rules of addressing people in working places and on social occasions
  • Topics: Modest self-introducing
  • Topics: Compliments to one's ability in terms of working positions
  • Topics: Expressions of compliments (appearance, disposition, to other people’s family members, and to one’s belongs)
  • Topics: Expressions of showing modesty
  • Topics: Modest expressions when talking about one's own family

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to: use expressions, sentences and statements in different forms of addresses, titles used in daily life and working places, compliments on different occasions, and understanding Chinese modesty. 

Who should enrol

This course is suitable for those have completed at least 3 Mandarin courses at CCE or other institutes.
