« Creative Arts/Drawing & painting

No dates are currently scheduled.

Note: This course will be held at Strathnairn Arts Association. There will be no sessions on 8 and 15 April.

This course we will look at the work of 3 artists who express the idea of the figure in the landscape. I plan for us to look at 3 artists, the American artist, Andrew Wyeth, the Australian Russell Drysdale & the Spanish artist, Salvador Dali. Three remarkably diverse artists.Wyeth gives us the solitary figure, often in a brooding, somewhat melancholy state. Drysdale, the figure, struggling in the harsh Australian rural landscape & Dali, often, where the figure becomes the landscape & the landscape becomes the figure.

Learning outcomes

  • We will study the three artists & observe their different treatments, it is this difference that is the creative challenge I am setting for you
  • The aim of the class is to give you the technical means & the creative understanding of methods these artists have used to express the idea of “The Figure in the Landscape”
  • To help you I will discuss Wyeth’s technical mastery of rendering form & light, Drysdale’s, expressive distortion of the figure & emotive use of colour & Dali’s surreal, subconscious inventiveness
  • On the completion of the course, you will be equipped with both a technical & creative repertoire to make your own creative choices for future work

Who should enrol

This class would best suit students with an intermediate & advanced level of painting experience or students who are prepared to jump into the creative deep end & see what happens.
