Please Note: No classes 29 September and 6 October

We all live a domestic world, a roof over our head, favourite  things around us, paintings on the wall. In this class we will look at the work of three Australian women artists who took delight in painting their domestic world, they are Jean Bellette, Grace Cossington Smith & Margaret Preston. Bellette took delight in painting a corner of a room, things on a table, often with a “Cubist” edge to them. Cossington Smith often produced work that contained things in the room & glimpses of the garden through the window. Preston love of vases of  flowers, a tray set for afternoon tea, were among her favourite subjects. So, using these three artists as “creative role models” we will study the various creative means the used to  paint things around the house & looking out the window.

Learning outcomes

The class aims to make students aware that the everyday world of life at home is a rich source of creative inspiration. To give them the means to sit at home with either a sketch book in hand a a canvas on an easel & paint a corner of home. Also, to know what medium is best used to describe their choice of subject matter. The learn to choose what stylistic device or combination of stylistic devices learnt from the class , that they can then employ in their own work to produce work that is satisfying to them.

Who should enrol

The course would best suit students who have had some previous painting experience & students who have had considerable painting experience or students who are prepared to jump in the deep end & see what happens?
