Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC) is the equitable, sustainable and transparent use of the available resources to achieve better outcomes and experiences for every person. Value should always be defined around the customer. However, current organisational structures and systems of healthcare delivery make it challenging to measure and deliver value. Most healthcare providers fail to do so.

This Executive Education course will teach you the fundamental concepts and theories of VBHC, including the ‘Value Agenda’, high and low value interventions, unwarranted variation, outcomes measurement, and models of VBHC that have been successfully implemented in health services around the world. Led by industry experts, you will explore the policy and regulatory levers that support VBHC models and the role of government, consumers, and private enterprises to drive value and innovation in healthcare. You will be equipped with the skills to design, implement and evaluate models of care that deliver better outcomes for patients in your health or care service.

Through a combination of interactive lectures, case-based studies, and practical exercises, you will learn how to measure patient outcomes, accurately capture costs, integrate knowledge from diverse datasets and re-design models of care that improve efficiency and create value for patients. Principles of leadership theory, change management and strategic thinking are taught in this course to provide participants with the skills to conceptualise, communicate and affect sustainable change in healthcare.

This short course intensive has been designed for current and future healthcare leaders and is a core part of the Health Executive Education program at the ANU College of Health and Medicine.
