Course outline

  • Topic 1: Talking about you: job, age and address. Working day. Grammar: genre of nouns; numerals
  • Topic 2: Relationships: family and relatives; friends. Grammar: possessive pronoun; “Qual/Quais”
  • Topic 3: “Being Portuguese”: the “tipical Portuguese”.  Grammar: locatives “cá”/ ”lá”; “Gostas de bacalhau, não gostas?”
  • Topic 4: Daily rotine: work and laisure. Grammar: v. “ir”; prepositions
  • Topic 5: Review of previous lessons
  • Topic 6: Healthy life: Portuguese diet; Mediterranean food. Grammar: adverbs; V. “dormir”, “beber”, “comer”
  • Topic 7: Country life: historical villages and small towns, rural tourism. Grammar: Adjectives; “haver” vs. “estar”
  • Topic 8: Social lifestyle: restaurants and pubs. Review of previous grammar items

  • Verbs of 1st, 2nd and 3rd conjugation;
  • Regular and irregular verbs;
  • Adjectives and comparison;

Course outline

  • Topic 1: This session gives you the opportunity to learn about Portugal and some features of its culture. You will be introduced to pronunciation, compliments, greetings, and self-presentation.
  • Topic 2: Learn about the Portuguese influence throughout the world. Be introduced to nouns, definite and indefinite articles and numbers 1 to 10.
  • Topic 3: Learn how to describe people.”How do I look like?” Be introduced to present tense of verbs “to be” (“ser”/ “estar”).
  • Topic 4: Learn about famous Portuguese people. Learn to ask “Where are you from?” and “What’s your nationality?” Be introduced to the plural of usual nouns, days of the week and numbers 11 to 20.
  • Topic 5: This session learn about popular Portuguese festivals. Learn to ask about common interests: “what do you do in your spare time?”. Be introduced to regular verbs.
  • Topic 6: Be a tourist in Lisboa (Lisbon) and Porto (Oporto). Learn to ask for directions, how to book a hotel and how to use public transport. Be introduced to numbers 51 to 100.
  • Topic 7: Learn about Portuguese objects. Become familiar with shopping and small talk. Talk about your favourite things. Be introduced to negative sentences, adjectives, colours, and numbers 21 to 50.
  • Topic 8: In this last session you have the opportunity to review previous lessons.

Beginning Portuguese 2 is designed for those who have successfully completed Beginning Portuguese 1 or 20 hours of similar study. The course will revise some basic aspects of the language and explore some of the grammatical features of written Portuguese. Beginning Portuguese 2 will also discuss the different characteristics of the language in daily life.

Course outline

  • Topic 1: Talking about myself: physical description, who am I, what's my favourite colour
  • Topic 2: Public transportation, rent a car, travel from one city to another, timetable (shops, restaurants, museums)
  • Topic 3: "What's up?": Famous Portuguese artists, popular festivals, football match. Detailed directions
  • Topic 4: Booking or cancelling a hotel, a ticket for a concert. Portuguese handicraft
  • Topic 5: A tourist in Lisboa and Porto; Portuguese food and wine; best places to go; traditional ingredients
  • Topic 6: Review of previous lessons
  • Topic 7: Portuguese culture and literature: writers, painters, architects. Write a postcard in Portuguese
  • Topic 8: Practice Portuguese language; talk in Portuguese and review previous lessons
