Ever been interested in creating fine objects in wood? Well, this course is for you! Understand timber properties and learn basic hand skills to bring home a masterpiece of your own.

Each week will see a more demanding stage for the project at hand. hand tools will be fully explained and demonstrated along the way. Preparation and finishing of the project are a crucial part of the course.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, you should:

  • have an understanding of the importance of allowing for wood movement in making various items in wood
  • successfully complete a beautiful object in wood.

This course is open to anyone interested in woodworking. No experience is necessary, and all levels can be catered for.

Construct your very own beautifully crafted jewelry box, discover the world of fine woodworking – the tools, techniques and materials. Learn a combination of hand joinery and tooling techniques while being introduced to veneering.

Course outline

From week-to-week gain skills in fine woodworking techniques and processes which you can then apply to a host of varying future projects. Gain knowledge in veneering applications and solid timber techniques, through to sanding and finishing.

Discover your own unique spin on design through the selection and combination of timber and veneer types and the application of these within your piece.

By the end of the course, you should:

  • have an understanding of basic veneering processes
  • understand the material properties of timber, including types, grain direction and timber suitability in various applications
  • understand the safe operation of fine furniture hand tools and techniques
  • appreciate the suitability of finishes fit for the intended purpose of a piece.
