Discover Arabic—the official language of 23 countries and spoken by more than 280 million people world-wide. Arabic has many dialects, every country has its own, also many accents in each country. What we teach at CCE and ANU is the Modern Standard Arabic ( MSA) and it’s called in Arabic “Fusha.” MSA is the official Arabic that it’s used at schools, universities, government offices and also is the language for the Quran the holy book of Islam. All Arabs understand MSA perfectly and without any problem.

Course Outline
- Topic 1: A focus on letters of the alphabet, in particular, those in Group 1 – ba, ta, tha, nun and ya. Introduction to the vowels fatha, kasra and damma. Learning how to greet others and introduce yourself.
- Topic 2: Learning Group 2 alphabet letters including alif, dal, dhal, ra, zay and waw (one-way connectors). Handwriting practice and vocabulary will also be a focus.
- Topic 3: Focus on the letters: jim, kha, ha’, ha and mim. You will also learn about family, feminine words and long vowels.
- Topic 4: The letters sin, shin, sad and dad will be the main focus. You will then learn about jobs, masculine singular, feminine singular and dual words before starting work on conversations.
- Topic 5: Revision of unit 1-4.
- Topic 6: You will focus on the letters fa, qaf, kaf and lam and then focus on describing things and possessive endings, definite and indefinite nouns as well as demonstrative nouns.
- Topic 7: The letters ta, ayn, ghayn will be a focus as well as joining letters, sun letters and handwriting.
- Topic 8: You will learn how to ask questions, such as ‘where is it?’. There will also be a focus on adjectives and describing places.
- Topic 9: Revision and learning about Arabic countries and people will be the main focus.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- learn the basics of the language including numbers 1-10, greetings, meeting people and gender addressing
- understand basic elements of Arabic writing and reading simple words.
Who should enrol
This course assumes no prior knowledge of Arabic and is suited to the traveller or anyone looking to enjoy Arabic literature.

Arabic 2
Course Outline
- Topic 1: Quick revision of the alphabet, ta marbuta, separate and attached pronouns. A focus on the Arab countries and their capital cities, learning albisba (misr, misri) and how to form alnisba.
- Topic 2: A focus on counting including introducing masculine and feminine numbers, asking, “how much?”, structure note and vocabulary
- Topic 3: Looking at shapes and colours including the Arabic root, plural patterns 1 and 2, the masculine and feminine of colours and vocabulary
- Topic 4: A look at ordering and buying food including going to the grocers, names of venues and items and how to order from the menu at a restaurant
- Topic 5: Revision of week 1-4
- Topic 6: A focus on the past tense of verbs such as asking, “what happened yesterday?”, including structure notes and vocabulary
- Topic 7: A look at plural patterns 3&4 (kalb, kilab), continued work on numbers and a look at the weather and how to write a letter
- Topic 8: A focus on verbs including past negative and present negative as well as how to compare, such as comparing past and present
- Topic 9: Conversation, constructing sentences using the past and present tense verbs, using possessives pronouns in a sentence, nominal and verbal sentences and putting case endings on words in a text.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to communicate in a simple way with an increasing range of vocabulary and language functions.
Who should enrol
Students who have completed Beginning Arabic 1 (Arabic 1) or similar (approximately 20 hours of study).

Arabic 3
Course outline
The course aims to further improve the skills of those who completed Arabic 1 and Arabic 2 or similar study, to develop your communication skills in a wide range of contexts.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, you should:
- have and use a wide range of sentence structures and phrases
- have a greater variety of vocabulary
- be able to use everyday verbs and their conjugations
- have a good balance between understanding the systems of Arabic grammar and vocabulary
- develop skills of understanding and producing Arabic in speech and writing.
Who should enrol
Students who have completed Beginning Arabic 1 and 2 or similar (approximately 36 hours of study).
